Messi hands Inter Miami first FIFA Club World Cup appearance

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has announced that Inter Miami are qualified to Club World Cup 2025.

Gianni Infantino has announced Inter Miami will represent United States as the host country for the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 based on their outstanding and consistent 34 match in MLS campaign that saw them seal the trophy with two games to play.

Inter Miami will open the tournament as the host team and play the inaugural match of 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

 

What is the Club World Cup?

Prior to changes by FIFA, the Club World Cup tournament was held annually every December. The tournament was contested by winners of continental club competitions from around the world. Examples the winners of UEFA Champions League(Europe) would take face off  against their continental counterparts from South America(CONMEBOL), Asia(AFC), Africa(CAF), North America(CONCACAF), and Oceania(OFC).

But Gianni Infantino made some changes to the tournament in 2024 which means the tournament will be held every four years and no longer annually. And expansion of 32 Club teams to feature in the tournament starting from next summer.


When and where will the next FIFA Club World Cup  take place?

The next FIFA Club World is set to take place on the 15 June to 13 July 2025 in United States of America.

But the draw of the for the 2025 Club World Cup is set to take place in December 2024.

Qualification for the Club World Cup

for the new edition of the FIFA Club World Cup that will take place next summer, the winners of the Champions League for the last three seasons ; Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, will be joined by the best performing sides in the tournament during same periods. Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan have qualified through this ranking route.

Both the Asian Football Federation, African Federation and the North American Federation gets four teams each based on the winners and best performing teams in their Champions League respectively.

The South American Federation will get six teams that perform best in the Copa Libertadores. The Oceania side gets one slot for the best performing team in the OFC Champions League over the past four years, and a final slot to a team from host nation.
